SINGAPORE - The People's Action Party (PAP) and Workers' Party (WP) will hold the first two rallies of this general election on Wednesday night (Sept 2), after permits were issued by the police on Tuesday afternoon.

Both rallies are for single-seat wards.

The PAP will hold a rally for Radin Mas SMC at the Delta Hockey Pitch at Tiong Bahru Road from 7 to 10pm, while the WP will hold a rally for Hougang SMC at an open field in front of Block 837 Hougang Central at the same time.

A list of designated sites for election rallies, which can be held between 7am and 10pm from Wednesday, Sept 2, to Wednesday, Sept 9, was released by the police on Tuesday.

In a statement, the police encouraged members of the public to take public transport to the rallies, citing the large crowds expected at election meetings. Motorists travelling near the election rallies should be prepared for traffic diversions or lane closures, the police said. Real-time updates on the traffic situation will be broadcast on the radio.

The police also urged supporters to assemble and disperse from the rally sites "in an orderly manner" and warned that it would not hesitate to take action against anyone who is unruly or who commits any offence at the rallies.

The operation of unmanned aerial vehicles or drones is prohibited for public safety reasons, the police added.

In addition, the status of the Speakers' Corner as an unrestricted area under the Public Order Act will be revoked from Tuesday till Polling Day on Friday, Sept 11. Exemptions for holding public entertainment activities at the Speakers' Corner under the Public Entertainment and Meetings Act will also be revoked during the same period.

Those who wish to organise activities at the Speakers' Corner will have to apply for the relevant permits and licenses during this period. The unrestricted status will be reinstated after Polling Day.
