It was a sad day for Singapore’s democracy when the Workers’ Party turned down Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s invitation to nominate another elected MP to replace Mr Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition (LO).

The move to strip Mr Singh of his title had put that post firmly under the spotlight. His party’s decision not to replace him is a setback as the institution of the LO is important for Singapore’s journey as a democratic nation.
