The most wonderful answers are the ones you aren’t ready for. I was expecting a lesson in science from the intelligent Ben Tan, a doctor, sailor and serious man, or perhaps a tutorial on winds. But what I received first was adventure and naval battles.

I’d asked Tan, Asian Games gold medal-winning sailor from 1994, about why his particular sport was so meaningful and he paused.
