You would have heard it coming – the clanging Chinese New Year music right after Christmas bid goodbye. My local supermarket immediately stocked its shelves with Chinese New Year cookies, decor and other festive must-haves the moment Dec 26 arrived. 

While I’m still not a fan of Chinese New Year music, I’ve come full circle in my appreciation of the festival. As a child, I looked forward to feasting and collecting red packets, though I was left slightly bewildered by prying questions from relatives (“So how did you do for your exams?”), and pre-rehearsed responses to avoid awkwardness (“Okay, lah, not too bad, quite average”).
