In a world awash with podcasts, TikTok videos and microdramas, perhaps we should be tickled that anyone is reading, in any medium, at all, says the writer.

Last week, social media told me I should be outraged that AI companies are buying up millions of books and feeding them to large language models (LLMs) so the machines that could replace us can write better.
The story is this: Tech companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Google are snapping up books – some rare and out of print – scanning them and using the contents to train AI models.
