Years ago, in a restaurant in Australia, the group of men I was seated with began making falsetto mewing noises. I was writing a feature about the Formula One race and the team playing host had invited journalists to dinner.

The trigger for the weird behaviour was the presence nearby of Australian comedian Barry Humphries. It would be funny to make sissy noises, the lads thought, because Humphries was famous for performing as his female alter ego, Dame Edna Everage.
