Earlier in January, as Iran went dark and President Donald Trump decided to start “running” one country (Venezuela) while

eyeing up another (Greenland)

, a sizeable swath of the internet opted out of reality to post snaps of themselves from a decade ago. Rather than talking about 2026, millions of people decided we should be dwelling on – or even in – 2016 instead.

Who were you in 2016? Did you love a pair of spray-on skinny jeans, winged eyeliner and choker necklaces worn with off-the-shoulder tops? Was your fledgling Instagram account a grainy paean to plates of avocado toast and acai bowls? Have you felt the need to reveal a one-time chronic use of Snapchat filters, including a puppy dog face and Coachella flower crowns? Or the fact that as a grown adult you happily roamed the streets playing Pokemon Go?
