From chatrooms to warungs, Malaysia has been abuzz of late over the matter of Islamic legislation.
In November last year, a man was sentenced to six lashes in Terengganu under the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment law of the state for committing khalwat (close proximity of a man and woman who are not married to each other). A month later in December, local authorities in neighbouring Kelantan announced their intention to make it mandatory for all food and beverage operators to obtain halal certification before their licences can be renewed.
