Parents shouldn’t fear new guidelines spelling out boundaries with teachers

Support is not being dialled back – rather, the moves will build stronger parent-teacher ties for our children’s sake.

All teachers go through life stages giving care to their family members, even as they teach in school. 

Parents and teachers must ensure that the duty of care to children does not overshadow the duty to nurture them, says the writer.

As educators who are also parents, my wife and I were heartened by the recent Ministry of Education (MOE) moves to better support teachers and parents to foster a stronger school-home partnership. 

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing announced the

refreshed Guidelines for School-Home Partnership in September,

saying this would help guide schools and parents on how to “work together positively, constructively and respectfully”.
