The clear, blue frozen waters of Lake Baikal in winter, the cautious squirrels storing nuts in the fall, the Arctic terns flying 30,000km to chase the summer. “Nature”, wrote Charles Dickens, “gives to every time and season some beauties of its own”.
Humans find their own poetry at different times of the year. Some prefer the swaddled starkness of the cold winter, others the grey, scowling awe of the monsoon. But my favourite season as a sportswriter is around late December into January and up until March, and it involves another species.
