The shockwaves of the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka by an American submarine continues to reverberate. Iran has vowed revenge for an attack that has stretched the theatre of war beyond West Asia. But there’s more. The sinking of the Iranian warship marks a significant new move on the South-West Asian strategic chessboard.

For India, it has created new pressure points, along with room for fresh manoeuvres. Not only has the attack taken place so close to home, the Iranian warship had earlier taken part in the ceremonial International Fleet Review hosted by India to foster maritime friendship.
