If haze season comes, Indonesia alone can’t fight the fires

A trip to a Sumatra pulpwood concession shows better preparedness. But the region still needs to help Indonesia, not judge it.

In the coming months, we in South-east Asia may find ourselves staring down the barrel of a twin climate threat: a “Godzilla” El Nino paired with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole. Both will bring warmer, drier conditions here.

On June 24, the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) outlined the starkest consequence of these two natural phenomena coming together: the heightened possibility of a severe transboundary haze event affecting Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
