In school, I was known as “Kueh” – a playful twist on my surname, Kwek, and also because it was the Hokkien slang for “chicken”. It was because growing up, I loved chicken rice. 

It wasn’t just chicken rice. Satay, wonton noodles, roast duck – all these dishes were my go-tos at the hawker centre.
