How swimming in the ocean in Australia taught me to live with risks

When I moved to Australia to start a new life three years ago, I packed several swimming devices alongside my clothes and personal belongings. These included a life jacket I had bought at Decathlon, an Arena kickboard and several pairs of prescription goggles. Once in Perth, I bought a swim noodle.

I was excited about swimming in the ocean.

Beaches in Perth

are phenomenally beautiful. Scarborough Beach is one of my favourites. I love sitting on the beach or wading in the water, as the waves crash onto shore in a dozen shades of blue.
