The last time I went to the United States, two of my closest friends insisted on sending me off – even though they would be seeing me in a week. One of them made his way to Changi Airport from Yew Tee (it would have been easier for him to head to Malaysia from home).

Before I went through immigration, my friends gave me the biggest hug. We laughed about the frivolity of a send-off for a week-long trip. I waved to them through the glass doors, saw them a week later, and didn’t think much of it.
