Disappointed with Golden Mile Complex plans
When news broke that Golden Mile Complex would be gazetted for conservation, I was excited. However, I am now disappointed with the announced plans.
The residential structure planned beside the building seems to dominate its silhouette, shifting its presence to the background.
It feels like the new design will strip the place of its cultural identity. Without the sights, sounds and businesses that made it “Little Thailand”, it risks becoming an empty shell, rather than a vibrant piece of heritage.

Support rethink of escalator etiquette
I was very heartened to read about the benefits of encouraging standing on both sides of escalators (Benefits to encouraging standing on both sides, Nov 13).
Some people may have difficulties balancing, or other unseen issues, which may make standing on the left unsuitable or risky. However, when they stand on the right, they may have to tolerate unkind remarks or signs of impatience from other commuters. The reasons given in the letter are well thought out and deserve support from the authorities.

Why are many places still shunning e-payment methods?
As Singapore moves towards becoming a smart nation, the push to adopt electronic payments has become more prominent. Yet, I’ve noticed that many places here still do not accept e-payment methods like PayNow.
Are some shops avoiding cashless options to cater to older residents? Or are there technical or infrastructural challenges?
If Singapore integrates EZ-Link for retail transactions, older citizens might feel less like they are using new tech and more like it’s an extension of something they know.
