I refer to the article “‘Hear the bread talk, but the kopi tiam’: More than 100 S’pore poems take over MRT trains, stations” (Nov 2).
I think The Straits Times can also do its bit to encourage reading and literacy in literature, particularly poetry.
Here’s my why:
About reading poetry
I enjoy reading poetry
when it rhymes
with metric iambic
not skipping a beat
The sound of music
in the music of words —
that’s poetry I love
listening as I read
About writing poetry
Poetry is painting with words
in vivid colours and hues
of landscape and life immersed
in movements and moods
Poetry is story-telling
as ballads, musicals, movies
allegorising satires
of life’s ironies and fates
Poets write poetry for their own
pleasure and delight. Whether
anyone else enjoys as much
is purely happenstance
