Letter of the week: Let’s not begrudge anyone the SG60 package

Forum writer Samuel Choo questioned the need to give SG60 vouchers to all Singaporeans aged 21 and above, and $800 CDC vouchers to each Singaporean household (Financial aid should be targeted to help the disadvantaged, Feb 26).
He implies that for high-income households, the vouchers could be just a small fraction of their household income, but this is unsubstantiated.
How does Mr Choo define “not equal”, when there are, for example, people rich in assets but poor in cash (Private property residents cheer news of climate vouchers and ageing-friendly fittings, Feb 24).
Singapore already has many schemes that are adequately targeted to help the disadvantaged and struggling parents to ensure their children have access to full and fair opportunities early in life, with help given for their education, financial and medical needs.
Low-income families can tap several financial assistance and support schemes offered by government and private organisations. There are also food distribution drives and community stores where low-income residents can get free basic groceries.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the SG60 package is to recognise the contributions of all Singaporeans and to share the benefits of the nation’s progress. It is also a support measure to ease the cost-of-living pressures felt by all.
The poor are likely to always be in our midst but the SG60 package is given out only once, to mark Singapore’s independence 60 years ago.
So, let us all embrace it and celebrate, and give thanks to our Government for its thoughtful, inclusive – where no one is left out – and generous initiative.
