I refer to the article “

NSmen and mental health: Our soldiers don’t need to suffer in silence

” (March 20), and wonder if the mental health or mental endurance capability of our NSmen could be the weakest link in our country’s defence.

The true test would be during a real war-time situation (which we are preparing for and working hard to prevent from happening), but we cannot afford to find out only then.

This is where realistic training (to allowable limits) comes in. As an example, soldiers go through the experience of being a prisoner of war. There would be some who cave in and give up during the training.

It’s always a delicate balance between realistic training and the well-being and welfare of our NSmen. Would the numbers giving up be higher in a real situation?
