I was delighted when the Workplace Fairness Act was enacted as it protects employees against discrimination in Singapore’s workplaces. It is an important milestone in Singapore’s evolving employment landscape.

However, I just came to know that this Act does not apply to the public service.

The public service employs many residents in Singapore, and exempting these public agencies from the Act raises many concerns. Does it mean that if these employees are discriminated against in the workplace, they have no recourse through the provisions of this Act? Are we assuming that discrimination will not occur in the public service? Or that when such discrimination does occur, public servants will be protected?

NTUC advocates that “every worker matters”, but if that is the case, why are public servants not covered by this Act?
