As Singapore approaches its next chapter of nationhood, the question of what it means to be a good citizen takes on renewed importance.
Beyond economic success and technological advancement, the true strength of our nation lies in the everyday spirit of care, unity and responsibility that each Singaporean carries.
Citizenship is more than holding a passport or singing the National Anthem. It is a lifelong journey of growing with our country, embracing opportunities to serve, and extending kindness and solidarity to our fellow citizens.
I have captured this spirit in the following reflection:
The art of citizenship is to continue to love our nation and grow with it as long as we live.
Every moment brings opportunity for us to serve with integrity and care.
Every fellow Singaporean is a neighbour, a companion in this shared journey, entrusted to us for respect, kindness and solidarity.
Care in all directions, across all differences.
Develop in us:
a desire to know our history and heritage more deeply;
a humility to know we stand on the shoulders of past generations;
a thirst for unity in diversity;
a capacity to choose harmony despite the struggles, challenges and changes;
an appreciation of our land and the blessings of nature;
a call of duty to protect and strengthen our nation for generations to come; and
a deep concern for everyone in our society, so that no one is left behind.
Care! Care never ends.
Singapore is our home, always present for us.
Let us never stop building, never stop caring, never stop striving – together.
In the recent National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong reminded us that the future of Singapore depends on choosing “we” over “me”.
This message resonates strongly with the art of citizenship. It is about putting community before self-interest and recognising that our collective resilience is greater than any individual achievement.
Citizenship is an active, living practice. It is about cherishing our heritage, protecting our environment, ensuring inclusivity, and working together to safeguard Singapore’s future.
In an age of global uncertainty, the art of citizenship asks us to hold fast to unity, compassion, and resilience.
For Singapore to thrive, every citizen must not only take pride in what we have achieved but also shoulder the responsibility of shaping what we can become together.
