I read with disappointment about the reported altercations between volunteers from the People’s Action Party and the Progress Singapore Party during outreach activities in Bukit Gombak on Jan 4 (PAP and PSP allege harassment during Chua Chu Kang walkabout, offer different accounts, Jan 8).
Such incidents reflect poorly on the conduct of political engagement, and undermine the spirit of public service.
Outreach efforts by political parties should aim to connect with residents and address their concerns, fostering trust and goodwill within the community.
When disputes occur, they not only distract from this purpose but also create unnecessary division among residents who look to their leaders for guidance and unity.
The alleged instances of harassment, physical altercations and online harm are troubling.
If substantiated, they highlight the need for all parties to exercise greater care in their interactions.
Furthermore, the use of social media to escalate such disputes only exacerbates tensions. Public airing of grievances risks deepening mistrust and shifting focus away from meaningful engagement with the community.
I urge all political parties to reaffirm their commitment to respectful and constructive engagement during outreach activities.
