I refer to the article “

Singapore’s independence was not inevitable; key leaders on both sides pushed for Separation: SM Lee

” (Dec 7).

As someone born in the early 1990s, I have only ever known Singapore to be a stable and successful country. For many in my generation, it is easy to assume that its achievements were simply the natural outcome of good governance and hard work.

The article provided a striking reminder that independence itself was not a given, and that Singapore’s leaders grappled with difficult choices under intense pressure. It underscores how fragile the early years were, and how easily events could have unfolded differently.

Understanding this makes me even more proud of how far Singapore has come. The safety, opportunities and social cohesion my generation enjoys today were built on decisions made in times of uncertainty, and on the commitment of earlier generations who had far less to work with.

The release of the Albatross File is timely. It gives younger Singaporeans a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced in 1965, and reminds us that unity and stability cannot be taken for granted.

With a clearer sense of how precarious the nation’s beginnings were, my generation can better appreciate our responsibilities in helping Singapore continue to flourish.
