Forum: Too little time given to write a proper composition for PSLE English paper

I refer to the article “The ABCs of acing the PSLE English composition” (July 5).

The strategy of memorising plots for use in the composition examination runs counter to promoting creativity, which I believe the Ministry of Education (MOE) is trying to achieve.

However, tuition centres and students have to resort to this strategy because of the short duration of 50 minutes given to write the creative composition.

Even the average adult will have difficulty writing a compelling composition within that time.

If creativity is what MOE hopes to achieve, then it should change the format and give more time for students to turn in sincere works, rather than copycat versions, for the composition question of the PSLE English Paper 1.

The current time given not only stifles creativity, but also stresses students unnecessarily. We should make learning rewarding and enjoyable.
