We refer to the letter “

A hassle paying toll fee at Customs checkpoint

” (Oct 21) by Mr Ong Kok Weng.

Singapore is in the midst of transitioning to the new ERP 2.0 on-board unit (OBU) system, which replaces the current in-vehicle unit (IU) system. To date, more than 80 per cent of vehicles have had OBUs installed. After the OBU migration exercise is completed, we will transit to a contactless toll collection system at the land checkpoints.

Tolls at land checkpoints can then be deducted automatically via motorists’ preferred mode of contactless payment – either through the Cepas card inserted in the OBU or at the backend, if a payment account has been linked to the OBU.

We hope the upcoming new feature of the OBU will make cross-border travel more convenient for motorists.

We thank Mr Ong for his feedback.
