I urge the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) to adopt a more pragmatic stance on the future of manufacturing in Singapore ( Let’s get real about S’pore’s manufacturing sector manpower needs
While highlighting the manpower challenges, it’s essential to stay grounded in the broader economic trends shaping our landscape.
First, structural issues like high operating costs, labour shortages, an ageing workforce and regional competition will persist. For manufacturing to thrive, we should focus on scalable activities that are not resistant to automation and that align with Singapore’s strengths, rather than on labour-intensive roles that are more efficiently performed elsewhere.
Second, like neighbouring countries, Singapore must move up the value chain by prioritising high-value activities such as design and innovation over labour-intensive production tasks. This shift allows us to leverage our strengths and stay competitive in the global supply chain.
Lastly, SBF could partner with consultants to develop a realistic manufacturing road map aligned with government policy and trends. Collaboration with different ministries will help ensure a unified framework to support this shift.
Rather than reacting to short-term issues, SBF should promote long-term strategies that set realistic expectations, offering a blueprint that could guide other sectors towards sustainable growth in Singapore’s unique economic environment.
