On June 17 around 10am, I was with my 11-year-old niece in the train travelling towards Bishan. Just before we arrived at Bishan station, she suddenly became weak and nearly fainted. As I supported her and tried to keep her conscious, a kind lady, sensing that I needed help, quickly pressed the emergency communication button to alert the train staff.

I felt this was an act of courage and compassion considering that one risks being fined when the button is not used appropriately. Upon arriving at Bishan station, three SMRT staff responded promptly and provided assistance. Another fellow commuter offered some essential oil.

To the strangers who stepped forward that day – thank you. I am heartened and feel proud that we live in Singapore, a country filled with warmth and kindness.
