I am heartened to hear that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has been working towards cultivating higher-quality teachers to maximise students’ full learning potential (Teacher quality more important than class sizes, says Chan Chun Sing, Jan 2).

After graduating from junior college, I realised it was not just the teachers’ style and content delivery that enhanced my educational experience. It was also the attributes they exhibited. The affirmative words when I was faced with disappointing scores, the nurturing heart to show concern about my life outside school and the deep passion for the subjects they taught. These were what truly inspired me to not just study but also find joy in learning.

Only when students feel inspired would they take ownership of their learning. They would, in turn, spur their peers to do the same – a positive ripple effect that goes a long way.

Education opens up opportunities. I will always thank my teachers and MOE for the person they have made me today.
