My single aunt is a low-income earner staying in a three-room flat. When she was hospitalised, the hospital social worker liaised with me to provide aftercare support.
The social worker arranged for my aunt to receive a government subsidy every month to cover her transport and meals at the day care centre and at home.
A driver and volunteer took her to and from hospital for medical reviews. When my aunt’s cancer relapsed, the social worker found a hospice near my house so that I can visit her frequently.
When my wife was diagnosed with cancer, my employer was understanding and provided me with flexi-working hours to give me more time to take care of her.
When my wife was staying at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the doctors and nurses cared for her, and bought a birthday cake to cheer her up. When her immune system was low, she was placed in an isolation room so my young children could visit her till her last day. The nurses and social workers also consoled and counselled my young children and me during the most difficult time of our lives.
My children are studying at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School, which provided a school counsellor to give them emotional support during my wife’s sickness.
The school principal and counsellor were at the wake to provide moral support and console my children. My son’s form teacher also visited the wake daily to help my son prepare for his PSLE, which was two days after my wife’s funeral.
I am grateful for the good and sound care system that we have here.
