I refer to the article “

New initiative to help young people with poor mental health when ‘red flags’ appear

” (June 20).

It is sad to read about young people facing mental health issues, and how this is on the rise.

The ability to process emotions is a learnt skill that people might not have if they were not taught by their caregivers. An inability to process one’s emotions often leads to unnecessary stress, anxiety and other mental health issues.

I hope that while addressing young people’s mental health issues, Singapore can also place more emphasis on teaching children from a young age how to process their feelings and emotions. Many parents struggle to manage their own emotions, let alone help their children.

It is an essential life skill which will help our children navigate the struggles they face in life, both big and small. Children who are better able to process and manage their emotions grow up to become resilient and emotionally mature human beings.
