We noticed that The Straits Times published an article headlined “

Pointed signals: Why Singapore is standing its ground on cyberthreats

” (Feb 12) by deputy Opinion editor Bhavan Jaipragas.

Mr Jaipragas claims in this article, without citing authoritative and credible sources or providing valid evidence, that UNC3886 is widely assessed in the cybersecurity world as having Chinese state backing.

He further insinuates that the three Chinese nationals arrested by the Singapore Police Force for cybercrimes last November were part of a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, to suit his narrative in which China as a “cybersuperpower” consistently “attacks” Singapore and China is Singapore’s “cyberadversary”.

Last July, our embassy expressed our dissatisfaction to The Straits Times regarding another article by Mr Jaipragas, which similarly hyped up UNC3886’s linkage with the Chinese government without providing valid evidence.

As a well-respected newspaper that has a significant audience in the region, The Straits Times champions objective, independent, balanced and inclusive journalism and commits itself to providing high-quality and in-depth analysis to its readers. We hope that The Straits Times can truly uphold objective and rational reporting principles, and contribute to the development of China-Singapore relations, instead of doing the contrary.

Zhu Rentao
First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Singapore
