I have been interested in nuclear energy since I was young, and the Government’s recent discussions on advanced nuclear technologies are encouraging (New dedicated nuclear teams at EMA, NEA part of efforts to help S’pore make call on nuclear energy, Oct 20). As a first-year applied chemistry student, I and students like me hope we can contribute to Singapore’s energy future.

Professor Laurence Williams, chairman of the National Environment Agency’s Nuclear Safety Advisory Panel, pointed out that developing nuclear capability requires strong technical skills, a trained workforce, proper regulation and public trust (Offshore nuclear plant in S’pore can increase distance from communities, but poses drawbacks: Expert, Nov 16). These are long-term goals, but one important area is nurturing a solid pipeline of local talent.

If Singapore is thinking about nuclear energy, I suggest more structured opportunities for students in the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities.

Right now, there are few pathways into nuclear-related training or research. Introducing nuclear-focused modules, forming partnerships with international agencies, creating internships, and offering scholarships for overseas nuclear engineering programmes would help students gain early exposure.

Although foreign experts will be needed at the start, building a strong local core will strengthen resilience, build public confidence and allow Singaporeans to take ownership of this specialised field.

I hope that students who are passionate about nuclear science will be given the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to Singapore’s future.
