I hope Budget 2025 will allocate more funds to enhance the cleanliness of our public spaces, ensuring Singapore remains a home where we can live, work and play.
Canals, such as the sections near Ulu Pandan and Newton, seem to be laden with sludge, silt and self-sown plants. I hope more funds could be allocated to conduct dredging, desilting and other maintenance works so that our drainage system can cope better with peak stormwater run-off.
Public area cleanliness seems to be lacking. It is not uncommon to find heaps of dead leaves and other litter in public areas. We can even find litter on MRT platforms and in trains nowadays.
Our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had launched the Keep Singapore Clean campaign on Oct 1, 1968. Singapore was transformed into a clean and green “Garden City”. The campaign had reached out to every stratum of society and sought to impress upon Singaporeans the need to keep their environment clean.
2024 was designated the year of public hygiene. I hope Budget 2025 can be utilised to further improve the strategies and protocols for cleaning public areas, as well as to enhance school and public education to bin litter properly.
As we embark on becoming a “City in Nature”, cleanliness becomes an important, urgent agenda. Only with a rigorous programme and campaign can we maintain a clean and green state. Hopefully, we can have a more beautiful Singapore for SG60 and beyond.
