We thank Mr Ethan Tan for his letter “Make mass fitness events easier to access” (Dec 10) and agree that sport and fitness should be accessible, regardless of experience or background.
Sport Singapore (SportSG) provides opportunities for the community to participate in sport at our ActiveSG sports centres and through various programmes and events. Our wide selection of facilities and programmes cater to all ages and fitness levels, helping to lower barriers to participation and encouraging those new to fitness to lead an active lifestyle.
Learn To Play programmes are available across most of our ActiveSG sports centres, giving beginners a chance to pick up a sport or participate in mass fitness activities, under the guidance of certified instructors.
Similarly, our mass participation events are designed to be accessible – giving options to both experienced and amateur participants.
For example, Active Fest featured over 110 fitness activities and sports trials across five sports centres, letting participants try different activities before committing to a multi-week programme. The annual FunFam SportFest creates a family-friendly environment for children and parents to explore sports like hockey and boccia.
The Singapore Urban Sports and Fitness Festival attracted more than 90,000 participants at its recent second edition. Public tryouts let members of the public, without any experience, sample various urban sports conveniently at a single venue.
SportSG also supports events like HYROX Singapore, where organisers held beginner-friendly community training sessions with certified trainers to help first-timers feel prepared.
Similarly, Singapore’s national marathon offers different race categories from 5km to the full marathon, catering to various fitness levels.
Beyond events and programmes, other initiatives such as the SG60 ActiveSG Credit Top-Up for all Singapore citizens and permanent residents help to make sport and fitness more accessible to the public. These credits can be used to book ActiveSG and dual-use scheme facilities, buy gym and pool passes, and offset the cost of selected programmes by SportSG.
We appreciate Mr Tan’s suggestions and remain committed to ensuring that mass fitness events are welcoming, affordable and inclusive for Singaporeans of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
