I refer to Ms Heidi Ng’s letter “

Make modern soundproofing in HDB homes a key priority

” (Oct 6). While her suggestion is well intentioned, I believe that noise, to some extent, is unavoidable in high-rise living.

Neighbours themselves play a key role in keeping noise levels low through mutual understanding, tolerance and consideration for one another.

Introducing soundproofing materials on a large scale in HDB flats may not be practical or cost-effective. It would significantly increase construction costs, which may ultimately be passed on to home owners or taxpayers. Retrofitting existing flats would also pose technical challenges, as it could require major structural modifications.

Moreover, we should still be able to enjoy the natural breeze, the sound of birds chirping and the vibrant life of our neighbourhoods – simple pleasures that define community living in Singapore.

Over-insulating our homes may make them quieter, but also more closed off and detached.

No amount of soundproofing can replace the value of neighbourly respect, empathy and communication in fostering a harmonious living environment.
