We thank Mr Chan Kok Keong for the letter “ Take proactive approach to removing smoking corners at coffee shops
Smoking is currently prohibited in more than 49,000 premises, both indoor and outdoor.
It has been banned at all coffee shops since July 2006, except at designated smoking corners.
To further reduce the public’s exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, the National Environment Agency has stopped accepting applications for new smoking corners in coffee shops since June 2017.
Existing smoking corners in retail food establishments, including coffee shops, will be phased out when the licences of the establishments are terminated or cancelled.
The number of smoking corners will decrease over time. As at November 2025, there are less than 350 smoking corners at retail food establishments, down from more than 1,000 smoking corners in June 2017.
The National Environment Agency will continue to review its smoking policies regularly and welcomes feedback as we work towards a clean and liveable environment for all.
