I refer to the article “

Our Singlish still got future or not? The kids will tell you

” (June 1).

As a Singaporean, I prefer speaking Singlish because it’s convenient and widely used on the island.

It’s not that we can’t speak proper English, but Singlish is more than just a way of speaking – it is a form of national identity.

Just as the Australians have their accent and Americans speak with an accent distinct from the British, we have Singlish.

Sure, I could speak formal English every day. But why force it when everyone is speaking in sentences with “lah”, “loh” and “hor” to get the point across faster?

Singlish is unique to Singapore and our multiracial society. It isn’t merely broken English that we should shun. It’s here to stay.
