After reading Ms Kang Wan Chern’s article, “Migrating from Malaysia: The Singapore I chose has changed”
I arrived in Singapore in 1999 on an assignment with a multinational company. At that time, Singapore was often referred to as “SingaBore” and Sentosa as “So Expensive and Nothing To See at All”.
However, when I studied what Singapore offered me compared with two other developed markets where I had an opportunity to move to, I realised that the Singapore proposition was exceptional.
World-class government services, including healthcare, transport and parks; low taxes; a safe environment; proximity to my birth country (India); professional and social opportunities; and the availability of domestic help were key highlights.
None of these aspects have deteriorated over the years. In fact, many have improved significantly. During this period, barring my years in Malaysia and a recent two-year posting in India, all my years have been spent in Singapore.
I returned to semi-retirement here after my India assignment ended in 2025. Many of my colleagues in Singapore were surprised at my decision, as they see Singapore more as a place to just earn money.
But our needs evolve with age. The needs of an ageing individual (and each person may have unique requirements) revolve around quality healthcare, a supportive social network, financial security, a liveable climate and clean air, and the ability to be closer to nature.
I no longer require a large landed house as it would be difficult to maintain. I do not need to drive a luxury car, given the quality of public transport Singapore offers.
I feel secure here without concerns about burglary and theft. I enjoy the company of my long-time friends who reside here. My wife and I cherish long walks in the beautiful parks and gardens surrounding us.
I also look after my elderly parents who live with us, which is a privilege. I do not feel stressed at all, as stress is largely a mental construct.
In summary, if I can simplify my needs and achieve financial security, Singapore is an excellent destination to migrate to from anywhere in Asia, and perhaps beyond.
