SAF Day, marked every July 1, commemorates the Singapore Armed Forces and more _ it is a reminder of the shared responsibility that every generation bears in safeguarding our nation’s peace, security and future.
This year’s SAF Day, which marks 59 years of national service, carries even greater significance. In a world marked by geopolitical uncertainty, evolving security threats, and the lingering lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are reminded that peace and stability should never be taken for granted.
Since the passing of the Enlistment Act in 1967, generations of Singaporean sons have answered the call to serve.
It was a privilege for me to have served with the 1st Commando Battalion, completing rigorous training, including over 20 parachute jumps in Singapore and Thailand, jungle warfare in Brunei, amphibious operations, and the demanding 72km route march, to earn the coveted red beret.
Every badge worn on the uniform represents not just achievement, but also memories of sacrifice, resilience and brotherhood that remain with us for life.
Throughout our years of service, we witnessed defining moments that tested the SAF’s professionalism and resolve. We stood on standby during national security crises, honoured comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice during training, and learnt that military service is built not only on courage, but also on discipline, trust and unwavering commitment to one another.
Singapore’s success today did not happen by chance. From the beginning of our independence, our leaders understood that without security, there could be no economic progress, social harmony or national prosperity.
Today, thanks to the dedication of our regulars and national servicemen (NSF), and the unwavering support of more than a million operationally ready national servicemen (NSmen) and their families, Singapore continues to enjoy peace, stability and confidence in an increasingly uncertain world.
On this SAF Day, I salute every NSF, regular, NSman, and family member who has stood behind our servicemen throughout their journey. Your sacrifices often go unseen, but they form the foundation of Singapore’s security and resilience.
May we continue to serve with courage, humility and dedication, keeping Singapore safe for generations to come.
Happy SAF Day.
