We refer to the letter “Make road signs around Changi Airport more useful” (March 13) and thank the writer, Mr Chua Guan Hwa, for sharing his driving experience around Changi Airport.

It is important to us that drivers can navigate comfortably and confidently within the vicinity of Changi Airport, especially during peak periods and at night. To support a safe and consistent driving experience across Singapore, the roadways leading to and within the airport are designed in accordance with existing road standards. These include requirements for overhead sign formats, typefaces and colours. As Airport Boulevard serves as a shared carriageway providing access to different terminals, it is operationally challenging to designate dedicated coloured lanes for each terminal.

We understand Mr Chua’s concern about information load, and we agree that wayfinding should be as intuitive as possible. To reduce last-minute lane changes, we provide a series of advance directional signs along Airport Boulevard so that drivers have sufficient distance to position themselves safely. This is complemented by more directional signs leading to departure, arrival and carparks, which are placed nearer to the respective slip roads and decision points.

We also recognise the importance of clear visibility at night and in varying weather conditions. In addition to reflective sign faces, we have installed illuminated signs at key junctions, and we will continue to review their placement and effectiveness.

As Terminal 5 development works progress, Changi Airport Group will continue to work closely with the relevant agencies to ensure that road navigation within the airport remains safe, clear and efficient. We appreciate Mr Chua’s feedback, which helps us identify areas to improve the driving experience at Changi Airport.
