Retirement planning has often been framed around hitting specific savings targets – from $550,000 for basic living expenses to over $1 million for a more comfortable lifestyle (Prescribing retirement sum can have unintended consequences, March 4).

While financial security is undeniably important, we must not lose sight of what truly matters: how we live in retirement, not just how much we retire with.

A fulfilling retirement is more than a financial equation. It is about maintaining good health, staying mentally active, and nurturing meaningful relationships. Without these, even the largest retirement fund will offer little comfort.

Singapore’s CPF Retirement Account provides a solid foundation, offering a steady stream of monthly payouts to support basic needs. It is a reliable safety net, but it should not become a yardstick for one’s retirement “success”.

Instead of fixating solely on savings targets – which can create unnecessary anxiety and push some towards risky investments – we should place equal emphasis on holistic well-being.

Retirement should be about pursuing hobbies, volunteering, picking up new skills, and fostering social connections. Staying physically and mentally engaged not only enriches our golden years, but can also help reduce healthcare costs over time.

The goal should not be to retire with a certain sum but to retire with purpose, health, and peace of mind. Financial preparedness is important, but a meaningful retirement comes from balancing financial stability with a life well-lived.
