I read with interest the article on the redevelopment of the iconic Golden Mile Complex, which is set to reopen as The Golden Mile after its refurbishment (Post-revamp Golden Mile Complex to feature both new and familiar elements, Dec 11).
While I commend the efforts to conserve this architectural and cultural landmark, I believe the name Golden Mile Complex should be retained to honour its rich history and legacy.
Heritage is not just about preserving physical structures. It is also about maintaining the intangible essence of a place. Retaining the original name would demonstrate a commitment to conserving this icon’s spirit.
Over the years, it has been a movie spot, a place for Thai food and also a hub for long-distance bus services. The complex has been a vibrant part of our social fabric.
Changing its name risks severing the connection with its storied past, which many Singaporeans hold dear.
While redevelopment is necessary to rejuvenate the complex and ensure its relevance in modern Singapore, the name Golden Mile Complex serves as an enduring bridge between its past and future.
I urge the developers and stakeholders to reconsider the decision to rename it and instead celebrate its conservation by preserving its original name.
