As a car driver, I am often unnerved by motorcyclists weaving in and out between vehicles to overtake them.

They may unknowingly get into the blind spots of the vehicles and put their safety at risk, particularly with heavy vehicles.

I read the Singapore Police Force’s August

news release

on the mid-year traffic situation.

I noted that motorcyclists and pillion riders were involved in more than half, or 54.5 per cent, of all traffic accidents in the first half of 2024. They also made up 61.6 per cent of total traffic fatalities.

It is time for the authorities to relook the need to regulate lane splitting. This is the practice of riding between lanes, sometimes with vehicles on either side.

If motorcyclists are required to follow other road users observing lane discipline, this could help reduce the number of road accidents involving them.
