Like most retailers in Queensway Shopping Centre, our management council members are appalled by the Opinion column “Queensway could be next casualty in sportwear upheaval” (May 8).

The writer concluded that “there just isn’t a special reason to head to Queensway any more”.

Queensway Shopping Centre is still the sports mall in Singapore with more attractions on offer. As many as 38 sports retail units are selling various branded sporting goods Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, New Balance, Puma, Asics, Brooks and more, and offering a wide variety of rackets and racket stringing services. That is why Queensway Shopping Centre is affectionately known as Singapore’s sports mall.

Sportslink was just one of the many well-known sports tenants in Queensway Shopping Centre. The retail spaces left by it were quickly snapped up by strong sporting and speciality stores. It is incorrect to infer that the shuttering of Sportslink was “like the death of a queen bee... (calling) into question the survival of the colony of shops”.

Queensway Shopping Centre has since become stronger with a greater variety of sporting goods stores. Besides sports enthusiasts, there are various trades attracting customers from all walks of life every day, such as Janggut Katong Laksa and 328 Laksa that dish out delicious laksa daily; Optique Zone & Contact Lens Centre, AZ Optics Centre and many other optical shops that offer competitive optical services; Ultra Supplies and ABC Laser Engraving Service that provide printing and designing services; Queens Printing, 98 Design Embroidery Services and others that cater to the need for T-shirt printing and custom apparel; Honsieponsie, WEARE, Nightingale Thrift Shop and others that are famous thrift stores, and many more.
