Joan’s letter struck a chord because I too wondered about my purpose when I was younger (Perhaps, life’s purpose is found in the smaller things, Feb 24).

At 15, I never imagined I would become a doctor – let alone an entrepreneur, corporate manager, or least of all, a politician. Like Joan, I wondered if purpose was something that would suddenly reveal itself or if I had to actively seek it out.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for me, life gave me a sign. When my mother fell critically ill, I decided to pursue medicine. But my journey did not stop there. Along the way, I discovered an outsized zest for building networks, which led me to unexpected opportunities and roles I would never have considered in my youth.

Life has a way of unfolding in ways we cannot predict, and purpose often becomes clearer in hindsight.

Joan’s curiosity, enthusiasm, and openness will serve her well. I encourage her to embrace the unknown, savour each moment, and stay receptive to new possibilities. At the same time, a wise traveller remains vigilant – cautious of shortcuts that seem too easy and promises that sound too good to be true.

The good news is that no one travels alone. As a society and Government, we are here to support, guide, and invest in young people’s futures. And when life presents challenges, we will walk alongside them and, if needed, help carry them through.

To Joan and all young seekers of purpose – keep exploring, keep learning, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
