I refer to the recent news article, “One principal doctor to lead patient care” (Sept 20). I welcome the move.
Since the hospital clinician scheme was introduced in 2020, about 150 hospital clinicians have been appointed in our public hospitals.
Some of my elderly relatives who undergo regular check-ups at public healthcare institutions have often expressed their frustration with the current system, having to attend numerous appointments on different days, each with a different specialist.
Their children or caregivers must also take time off work to accompany them, adding to the strain.
A principal doctor who follows a patient throughout their medical journey would save precious time, effort and energy, while also building a stronger doctor-patient relationship.
Such a doctor would have a fuller understanding of the patient’s condition and be better placed to design a holistic and timely treatment plan.
I hope more doctors will be encouraged to develop their skills and join this scheme.
