I refer to the article “First phase of Greater Sentosa upgrade begins; Orchard Road refresh ongoing: Alvin Tan” (March 2).

As a Singaporean born in the early 1990s, I grew up alongside the transformation of Sentosa and Orchard Road. I remember Sentosa as a modest leisure destination in my childhood, and Orchard Road as the heart of weekend family outings and festive light-ups.

Over the years, I have witnessed how both precincts evolved to meet changing lifestyles and expectations.

I welcome the move to press ahead with the Greater Sentosa Master Plan. Strengthening connectivity within Sentosa and with Pulau Brani as well as implementing coastal protection measures early reflect a responsible and forward-looking approach to ensure Singapore’s long-term economic and climate resilience.

The rejuvenation of Orchard Road is also necessary. With the rise of e-commerce and shifting consumer habits, the area must evolve beyond traditional retail. Introducing more experiential, lifestyle and community spaces could help restore its vibrancy and relevance for both locals and visitors.

I am excited to see what lies ahead. However, I hope that in pursuing renewal, the authorities will continue to balance modernisation with preserving our heritage and identity.

In shaping the future of these iconic precincts, it is imperative that they retain their character and continue to honour our past even as they are refreshed for future generations.
