Singapore’s Move Lite Movement encourages citizens to walk, cycle or take public transport to promote environmental sustainability while keeping active.
To boost citizens’ participation, the Land Transport Authority has put up artworks depicting various people’s reasons for “moving lite”.
As a clinical psychologist, I’ve noticed that, while the artworks are beautifully done and relatable, one unfortunately seems to convey an unintended message.
The artwork depicts a tummy, with the statement “So that my girlfriend will stop pointing out my tummy”.
This artwork seems to normalise body-shaming, in that it is implied that having a protruding tummy is undesirable.
Every individual has a unique body influenced by genetics, health and lifestyle, and can still have a big tummy, be active and be accepted by loved ones.
