The death of Pope Francis marks the end of a papacy defined by humility, compassion and a sincere commitment to interfaith dialogue (

Pope Francis dies at age 88

, April 21).

One of his most memorable convictions was that “all religions are pathways to God”, a message that resonated globally, even as it invited theological reflection.

Pope Francis made historic contributions to Muslim-Christian relations. His landmark visit to the United Arab Emirates in 2019 was the first by a pontiff to the Arabian peninsula and a bold gesture towards interreligious cooperation.

He consistently spoke out against Islamophobia and condemned the misuse of religion to justify violence. These efforts earned him widespread respect among Muslims and advanced the cause of peaceful coexistence.

His message of fraternity also resonated deeply in multi-religious societies like Singapore. By championing dialogue, respect and mutual understanding across faiths, Pope Francis reinforced the values that underpin Singapore’s commitment to religious harmony.

His emphasis on building bridges over barriers inspired leaders and citizens alike to strengthen interfaith bonds while preserving the unique identity of each tradition.

As the world reflects on the legacy of Pope Francis, it is timely to deepen interfaith dialogue, acknowledging both our shared values and our differences.

True dialogue does not require agreement on all points, but it does require sincerity, humility and the willingness to listen.
