I refer to the article “66-year-old pedestrian dies after Bugis accident, driver arrested” (March 18).
Back in 2023, I had written to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), expressing my concern that the existing bollards and pedestrian protection measures at the junction were insufficient and spaced too far apart, leaving pedestrians waiting there exposed to any vehicle that might abruptly move ahead.
This is because the junction layout is such that pedestrians waiting to cross are directly in the path of an existing lane in Bencoolen Street, as the number of lanes is reduced from five to two after this traffic junction.
LTA, in its reply to me then, had deemed that the protection measures for pedestrians were
sufficient.
In the light of this accident, will LTA relook the design of this junction and see how pedestrians can be protected better?
